Objective

The primary objective of the Summer Internship Programme ("the Programme") is to provide an early opportunity for Hong Kong students who are currently studying in relevant full-time programmes in post-secondary institutions to acquire hands-on experience of working in the Marine Department ("MD"), so as to allow them to gain more in-depth understanding about MD and the maritime industry as well as facilitate their career planning.

Entry Requirements

Full-time students who meet the following requirements are welcome to apply –

  1. being a permanent resident of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region;
  2. undergoing full-time studies at a local or overseas tertiary institution and studying relevant programmes;
  3. undergoing non-final year of study and with a view to obtaining a Bachelor Degree / Higher Diploma / Associate Degree / Diploma in the relevant programmes; and
  4. having a good command of both Chinese and English.

Duties

The summer interns will be exposed to duties similar in nature to those of Assistant Marine Officers or Assistant Surveyors of Ships and gain experience from working in various sections of MD. They may also have the opportunity to visit companies in the maritime industry.

Terms of employment

The employment period will last for about two months in July and August each year (depending on office exigencies and individual students' availability, the actual employment period of each individual may vary). The remuneration will be stated in each year's recruitment notice. The monthly allowance for summer interns in 2024 is HK$11,200.

The recruitment is usually launched in March / April each year. A recruitment notice detailing the application procedures and closing date for application will be posted on the website of the Marine Department and Civil Service Bureau (https://www.csb.gov.hk). For general information, Hong Kong students studying in local post-secondary institutions should apply through the Student Affairs Offices / Career Centres of their respective institutions. You are advised to note the deadlines set by the respective institutions. Students studying in non-local post-secondary institutions should download the application form from the website of Civil Service Bureau (https://www.csb.gov.hk/english/admin/appoint/782.html).
