Questionnaire for ships on Y2K readiness
The Marine Department has distributed a questionnaire to all shipmasters, ship owners/operating companies and port operators to collect information on the readiness of ships with regard to the Year 2000 (Y2K) problem.

"Each ship operating company or port operator should complete and return the questionnaire to Director of Marine before the end of this month," a spokesman for the department today (Tuesday) said.

"As regards shipmasters, they should submit the completed questionnaire on their next call to Hong Kong, before departure," he said.

He added that if there were subsequent change to the information provided, an updated questionnaire should be returned to Marine Department as soon as practicable.

The questionnaire was designed with the purpose of exchanging information and to ensure that proper actions have been taken to accomplish Y2K readiness.

The Director of Marine will use the data collected as a reference to decide if any special restrictions are to be imposed on individual ship or operator during Y2K critical periods.

The questionnaire is attached to Marine Department Notice No.103 of 1999, which also enclosed an International Maritime Organisation (IMO) circular that gives advice on the Y2K Code of Good Practice and the key elements of Y2K contingency plans for ships, ports and terminals.

"All masters, ship owners and port operators are strongly advised to observe the Code of Good Practice so as to reduce risks and hazards associated with the Y2K problem," the spokesman said.

"They are also reminded to ensure that they have a contingency plan ready for handling any unforeseeable disruptions arising from the Y2K problem and that practical drills are carried out to ensure the effectiveness of their plan well before the Y2K critical dates," he added.

The Marine Department Notice, together with the IMO circular and the questionnaire, are available from the Central Marine Office on 3/F., Harbour Building, 38 Pier Road, Hong Kong, and it can also be downloaded from the department's website at http://www.info.gov.hk/mardep on the Internet.
