The Director of Marine, Mr Tsui Shung-yiu,
today (Friday)presented his commendation to 19 people for their
bravery acts during marine incidents.
Speaking at a certificate presentation ceremony, Mr Tsui said
that he was very proud of the recipients for their deeds of bravery.
"No matter how perfect our safety measures are, if there
are no such heroes that had dived into the sea to save others
at the risk of their own lives, the annual casualty figures on
people falling into the sea will probably increase sharply,"
he said.
In order to enhance navigational safety, Mr Tsui said the Marine
Department kept under review all related policies and stipulated
guidelines to ensure the safety of all ships and their passengers
on board when navigating within Hong Kong waters.
The department will also publish information leaflets to facilitate
the public to identify various types of local vessels and their
purposes.
"We expect that having a better understanding of the purposes
and categorization of local vessels, the public will not employ
vessels in improper uses and accidents will thus be avoided,"
Mr Tsui said.
He added that a promotion programme would be launched in the
next two months to remind local shipping industry that they should
employ crew members with appropriate and valid licenses as required.
The recipients, comprising three civilians, eight employees of
the Hong Kong and Yaumati Ferry Company Limited, a launch mechanic
from Fortune Ferry Company Limited, three Police Sergeants and
four Police Constables, have rescued a total of 14 people from
waters in the past 20 months.
