Inquiry into fatal vessel collision ordered
The Director of Marine, Mr Tsui Shung-yiu, has ordered a Local Marine Inquiry to investigate the circumstance attending a collision between two pleasure vessels off Tsing Yi Island early this (Sunday) morning.

Shortly after 5 am, the two vessels reportedly collided off a pier at Cheung Fat Estate. Ten men on board one of the vessels were injured and four of them were later certified dead in Yan Chai Hospital.

In accordance with the powers granted under section 58 of the Shipping and Port Control Ordinance , the Director of Marine appointed Mr Fan Wai-biu, Acting Senior Surveyor of Ships, to be the Investigating Officer.

Marine Department, Home Affairs Department, Social Welfare Department and Hospital Authority immediately set up an inter-departmental help desk to provide all ecessary assistance to the victims and their family members.

The Director of Marine and the Acting Director of Home Affairs, Mr Lui Hau-tuen, went to hospital to visit the injured and send their regards to the families of the deaths.

The Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, and the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Anson Chan, were promptly briefed of the collision and the follow-up actions.
