The Marine Department today (Wednesday) announced
that starting from tomorrow (October 1), vessels entering or leaving
Hong Kong through the south western approaches which are required
to employ a pilot, should embark or disembark their pilot at Ngan
Chau Pilot Boarding Station.
A Marine Department spokesman said that only hampered vessels
and oil tankers anchoring in the Kau Yi Chau Dangerous Goods Anchorage,
which have been entering and leaving Hong Kong through the West
Lamma Channel, should continue to pick up or discharge their pilot
in the vicinity of Green Island.
"Arrangement for these two categories of vessels are temporary
measure intended to dilute the traffic in the East Lamma Channel
so as to enhance the traffic flow efficiency," the spokesman
said.
"Such arrangement will be formalised in due course,"
he added.
If incoming vessels are in doubt as to where they should embark
their pilot, they should contact the Vessel Traffic Centre or
the Hong Kong Pilots Association over the VHF (very high frequency)
Radio-telephone on approaching Hong Kong.
The spokesman also reminded shipmasters and operators that all
vessels navigating in the vicinity of Ngan Chau Pilot Boarding
Station and Green Island should proceed in a seamanlike manner,
showing consideration to vessels engaged in picking up or discharging
pilots.
