The Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs
Anson Chan today (Thursday) visited the Marine Department to get
a first-hand knowledge of the department's marine traffic control
operation.
Greeted by the Director of Marine, Mr Tsui Shung-yiu, Mrs Chan
first met the directorate staff at the department's Macau Ferry
Terminal office where she was briefed on topical issues like marine
traffic management, helping business programme, Hong Kong Shipping
Register and departmental management.
She then toured the Vessel Traffic Centre (VTC) which is manned
by Marine Department staff round-the-clock to ensure safe and
efficient marine traffic flow in Hong Kong waters.
Mrs Chan learnt that the movement of Vessel Traffic Service (VTS)
participating vessels were directly regulated by the VTC through
a computer-based integrated radar surveillance system, a database
information system and VHF (very high frequency)radio telephone
communications.
She was pleased to know that later this year, after a new radar
station in Mirs Bay became operative, traffic surveillance in
that area would be further enhanced and that a complete upgrading
of the existing VTS system had been planned for early 2000's to
cope with anticipated growth in marine traffic into the next century.
Mrs Chan then proceeded to the Outer Pier Waiting Lounge to view
a fleet of five Marine Department vessels passing through the
outer channel of Macau Ferry Terminal. The vessels included patrol
boat "Boston Whaler", floating refuse collection vessel
"Sea Cleaner", explosive transportation vessel "Ever
Safe", vessel deployed to Correctional Services Department
"Seaway" and the Government's VIP launch "Tin Hau".
Before winding up the visit, Mrs Chan met the department's staff
representatives at a tea reception.
