The Marine Department has recently developed
a computer database Dangerous Goods Information System (DGIS)to
enhance the management of shipments of dangerous goods by ocean-going
vessels and local craft.
A spokesman for the Marine Department said today (Thursday) :
"With the establishment of DGIS, shipping agents can now
have more choices and convenience when submitting their Dangerous
Goods(DG) manifests.
"DG manifests can be submitted in three ways, namely by
hard copy, by diskettes and via Internet," he added.
The first method is to submit hard copy of DG manifests by hand
but this is restricted to office hours.
Alternatively, shipping agents may submit their DG manifests
by diskettes. It is possible for the shipping companies to convert
soft data received from shippers and save the required information
into diskettes for submission to the Marine Department.
The third means for DG shipping agents to submit DG manifests
is through Internet services. However, this service is restricted
to registered DG shipping companies for security reason.
Interested parties may obtain more information of the Department's
DGIS by visiting the Marine Department homepage web site : http://www.info.gov.hk/mardep/dgis.
