More than 80 shipmasters and safety officers
from some 20 shipping companies in China as well as personnel
from the Shekou and Shenzhen authorities yesterday (Friday) gathered
in Shenzhen and attended a Seminar on Maritime Safety in Hong
Kong Waters.
The participating ship companies were operators of conventional
river trade vessels and high speed passenger vessels.
Organised by the Marine Department with the assistance from the
Shenzhen Harbour Superintendency Administration, the seminar was
part of the Department's pro-active marine traffic management
programmes.
Being the first of its kind targeted at Chinese operators, a
number of such educational seminars have been organised for local
operators since last May.
At the seminar, Chinese shipmasters and safety officers were
briefed on Hong Kong's environment, the various procedures, rules
and regulations being in force in the port of Hong Kong.
It also focused on the general navigational environment in Hong
Kong, the operation of the Vessel Traffic Centre, the harbour
patrol functions, safe navigation practices and other port procedures.
One of the main emphases was placed on the need and importance
to comply with the various present port rules and regulations
in the territory.
The operators were also reminded that the Marine Department was
enhancing its efforts on control functions including stepped-up
prosecutions against offenders in breach of the port procedures
and regulations.
The Seminar on Maritime Safety in Hong Kong Waters was conducted
by Marine Department's Senior Marine Officer, Mr Sin Tak-cheung;
and Marine Officers, Messrs Hui Wing-chun and Li Tai-fai.
