Public urged to offer information on vessel collision
The Marine Department (MD) today (September 27) appeals to witnesses of a collision involving a tugboat and another vessel at Mainland waters to the west of Fan Lau, Lantau, about a week ago to come forward to offer assistance to an investigation.
A 24-hour telephone hotline 2545 0181 and a facsimile hotline 2541 7714 have been set up to collect information on the incident.

Around 1.15 am on September 21 (Thursday), MD's Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre received a report that a Mainland tugboat "Zhu Wai 102", while towing a Mainland barge "Zhu Wai 203" outbound from Hong Kong, had her towline crossed over by another vessel about one nautical mile northwest of Niutou Dao in Mainland waters to the west of Fan Lau.

The tugboat sank while the other vessel left the scene after the collision. Of the six Mainland crewmen on board, two were rescued, one is still missing while the bodies of the other three were later recovered by Mainland authorities.

The Harbour Superintendence Bureau of Guangdong Province is conducting an inquiry into the incident.
During the course of its investigation to find out whether any Hong Kong vessel is involved, the MD learnt that an high-speed craft of Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management Limited, "Universal MK 2006", was in the vicinity of the collision that occurred around 1 am.

According to the department's record, "Universal MK 2006" (trip no. E0104) had departed Macau at 12.33 am and arrived at Hong Kong's Macau Ferry Terminal at 1.37 am on September 21 (Thursday).

Passengers on board "Universal MK 2006" on that trip, or any other people who witnessed or had any knowledge of the incident, are urged to make use of the telephone and facsimile hotlines to provide information.
