China Ferry Terminal (CFT) will extend its operating hours from 7am - 10pm to 7am - 2am on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays starting from February 5 (Saturday), the Marine Department announced today (February 3).
A department spokesman said today that the four-hour extension at CFT would allow cross-boundary ferry operators to operate additional services on weekends and public holidays which would benefit travellers, particularly residents in Kowloon and New Territories, who would like to return to Hong Kong later in the evening.
The extension of operating hours was implemented under a pilot scheme which allows interested cross-boundary ferry operators to enter into licence agreements with the Government for occupying and using certain designated areas at CFT to provide ferry services during the extended hours. The Government invited expressions of interest from existing cross-boundary ferry operators last December and two of them responded.
After negotiations, the two ferry operators have signed licence agreements with the Government. It is understood that one operator will start to provide service to and from Macau from February 5 while the other from February 9.
"We are glad to see that the new arrangement, and hence new ferry services, can be implemented before the Lunar New Year holidays, which are usually one of the busiest periods of the year for cross-boundary travel," the spokesman said.
"The new arrangement will be reviewed toward the end of the two-year tenure of the licence agreement", the spokesman added.
The other cross-boundary ferry terminal, the Macau Ferry Terminal, currently operates round-the-clock. In 2004, about 12 million passengers travelled to and from Macau by ferry, of whom about 2.7 million used CFT.
