The Hong Kong Shipping Register (HKSR) has
crossed the 15 million gross tonnage (GT) mark, setting another
new record for the register, a spokesman for the Marine Department
said today (September 22)
Marking this milestone is the registration of a new 29,211 GT
chemical and oil carrier "Maritime Vanessa" on the HKSR.
To mark the significance of the event, Director of Marine Tsui
Shung-yiu signed and presented a certificate of registry earlier
to the local agent of the ship, the IMC Shipping.
This is the cover story carried in the latest edition of Hong
Kong Maritime News just published by the Marine Department.
According to Mr Tsui, the strong and continued support from
the shipping industry has helped boost the HKSR to its current
position.
"Last year, HKSR recorded a 116% increase to 13.7 million
GT, compared with that in April 1999 and is in the league of the
top 10 shipping registers in the world."
The HKSR has come a long way since the Marine Department
carried out major re-engineering efforts and reforms to beef the
register up from its low of 6.3 million GT three years ago.
"Shipowners have been praising the reforms and measures
introduced to the HKSR to simplify procedures as well as to lower
fees while maintaining itself as a quality register," the
spokesman said.
