The Director of Marine, Mr Tsui Shung-yiu,
today (April 10) presented commendation to 29 people in recognition
of their brave acts in saving lives during marine incidents in
the previous year.
Speaking at the commendation presentation ceremony, Mr Tsui accorded
high regard for the recipients' courage and altruism, and paid
special tribute to late fireman Chiu Shun-on and his colleagues.
Mr Chiu sacrificed his life while he was trying to save a boy
in the rough seas off Tai Long Sai Wan on August 28 last year.
The gallantry of Mr Chiu and his colleagues had exemplified
the best values of civil servants, Mr Tsui said.
"Seeing a young boy being swept into the sea by big waves
off Tai Long Sai Wan in Sai Kung, a group of off-duty fire officers
on scene initiated rescue action immediately."
"In the face of extreme danger to himself, Mr Chiu Shun-on,
an acting Principal Fireman, attempted to rescue the boy. It was
a pity that he lost his life while trying to save that of other."
The task of maintaining the safety of life at sea would definitely
be much harder and the number of casualties would certainly be
much higher without the bravery acts and public spirits of people
like the commendation recipients, Mr Tsui added.
Six civilians, six employees of the Star Ferry Company Limited,
three Police Sergeants, nine Police Constables, and five officers
of the Fire Services Department were commended.
