The Director of Marine, Mr Tsui Shung-yiu,
today (February 4) signed an agreement with the Korean Register
of Shipping (KR), formally authorising the classification society
to provide statutory survey and certification services for Hong
Kong registered ships on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region Government (HKSARG).
These statutory services included the survey and certification
works covered in various international conventions, such as the
International Safety Management Code.
KR is the eighth classification society authorised by the Marine
Department to carry out such services. The other seven classification
societies authorised earlier are the American Bureau of Shipping(ABS),
Bureau Veritas(BV), China Classification Society(CLS), Det Norske
Veritas(DNV), Germanischer Lloyd(GL), Lloyd's Register of Shipping
(LR)and Nippon Kaiji Kyokai(NKK).
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr Tsui said: " The agreement
signifies the Government's move to enhance quality ship verification
and certification services by introducing market competitions.
"This additional class will provide shipowners with more
choices to cater for their needs," Mr Tsui added.
KR is a non-profit ship classification society established in
1960 in Korea. With its quality services, it has grown rapidly
along with Korea's shipbuilding and shipping industries and become
a member of the International Association of Classification Societies
since 1988.
Providing services to more than 2,000 ships totaling more than
20 million gross tonnage on its register, KR operates 38 exclusive
offices and 22 non-exclusive stations at the major ports around
the world.
KR has been vested with the authority of carrying out statutory
survey and certification services for 38 governments, including
the HKSARG.
