MD officer sets off for Australia to probe ship blast case
The Director of Marine, Mr S Y Tsui, has appointed the Acting Chief of the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, Mr S H Tse, to conduct a preliminary inquiry into an explosion on board a Hong Kong registered ship in Australia yesterday. The accident caused three deaths, four missing and one injured.
The investigation officer will fly to Dampier this (Monday) evening and will conduct the inquiry along with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.

The explosion occurred at about 4.30 pm yesterday on board the bulk carrier "Nego Kim" when the vessel was at anchorage off the port of Dampier, Western Australia.

The vessel arrived off Dampier on 17 November 2001 laden with a part cargo of scrap iron loaded from Adeliade and Fremantle. She was waiting for berthing at Dampier, which was scheduled for 19 November 2001.

At about 4.30 pm yesterday, the master of the ship heard an explosion and found afterwards that the deck and shipside on the portside abreast No. 1 cargo hold had been ripped open. Three of the four seamen working inside a portside topside ballast tank died instantly while the fourth one was injured and sent to the hospital later.

Four other seamen were believed to have been blown over the side and are still missing. Australian marine authorities are continuing their search for the missing crewmembers.

All the 23 officers and crewmembers on board the vessel were from Mainland China.
